Fun and Fitness

Just finished a version of Fight Gone Bad at the gym, then did some obstacles.

I am 27 days into The Streak, and physically I’m started to feel real good.

I think, at the core of it, the current success stems from having fun.

I didn’t jump in quickly and haven’t gone too intense (until now). It’s just been showing up. Doing physical stuff that is enjoyable. Not always, but a lot of the time that’s what it’s been.

It’s reinforcing the notion that fitness success isn’t about intensity, but about consistency. And consistency is a lot easier when you’re having fun.

A big part of that is the obstacle/ninja gym. We didn’t think about exercising or needing to be active when we were kids. We just got together with friends and played tag or sports, or we went to the playground and just did stuff because it was fun.

The obstacle/ninja gym is a playground for adults. (And kids, too.)

It’s fun. And it is engaging and moving the body the way it is meant to be moved.

Also, intentionally not going too intense has meant no injuries, and not feeling destroyed and hurt. That allows me to show up the next day and do something. And that creates a habit that gradually becomes built in to one’s lifestyle.

And that makes getting and staying fit easier.

But they also said leading up to the race they’d had rain like they’ve never had and the course was muddier than […]

Progress

We don’t notice when progress is happening. We only notice when progress has happened. Most of progress is spent feeling that we’re trudging along, not getting anywhere and not making progress. It’s why it’s so hard to keep at it. And it’s why we shouldn’t always trust our thoughts. The real challenge is to keep […]

Starting (Again)

The starting-again process is tough. It hurts. It can feel hopeless. And when you focus on what you think you “should” be doing, and do a hard, intense workout that causes a lot of discomfort and pain and makes you feel overwhelmed, it just makes what’s already a hard process that much harder. So, for […]
